Hello Powderhounds. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the season that was. I have decided that this will be my last blog entry this year. Sad, I know. But I’ll try and make it a good one. This is because talking about melting snow is depressing, plus I’m busy booking my beach holiday to Hamilton Island. Someone told me you can hire golf buggies to drive around the island like Van Wilder.

Wow it was windy on Tuesday. And wet too. That was the first of a few fronts that have been moving through this week. The weather was so bad at Thredbo, they had to call off the first day of the One Hit Wonder. Event organiser Tim Myers sent me a text on Tuesday morning from Thredbo Village saying, “Not sure what the weather is doing up the top…the wind gauge was last spotted flying over Cooma”. I am still yet to confirm if that is true, but we did officially record a wind gust that morning of 119km/h. The Bureau of Meteorology counts wind speeds of 90km/h as ‘Damaging’, so it was probably a good call to not jump that day and turn the lifts off. Wednesday was much better though. It’s been a disappointing month of snowfalls, or lack there of. Temperatures have been quite warm, and this has steadily reduced the snow pack. A cold- front on Monday did drop temperatures for a time with a light dusting of snow.

I’m going to refrain from using any clichéd statements about spring. ‘Spring has sprung!’ or ‘a touch of spring’ are good examples. Now, I wasn’t using those statements just there, I was simply identifying those clichéd statements I refuse to use for the purpose of this blog. But yes, spring is in the air. Ok, that one snuck up on me.

This season is like a reverse of last season. You remember how hardly any snow fell in June and July, and then it dumped with snow in August and September? It seems like this season is the opposite. Great snowfalls in June and July, with the typically fickle Australia ski season returning for August and September.

If you were up at the snow last weekend you would have probably skied some of the worst conditions I have seen. At no fault of the resorts, sliding around in the rain on Saturday was so slow going, at some points I had to skate downhill. I couldn’t believe how slow it was; you literally had to walk with your skis on everywhere. This was the result of extremely warm temperatures last week, which produced a really soft cover, and then the rain came down creating the perfect reciepe for ‘clag glue’. So we ‘called it a day’ around lunchtime, got some mates together and went to the amazing Wild Brumby Schnapps Distillary in the Snowy Mountains. This is seriously well worth a visit if you haven’t already been. Tell them I sent you!
